Sedation Dentistry Calgary - A Brief Overview Of Sedation Dentistry

Anxiety surrounding a visit to the dentist is an extremely common occurrence. Did you know that almost 85 million Americans experience anxiety or fear at the prospect of visiting a dentist’s office, and avoid the dentist for that same reason? It is a bit of a mind-boggling statistic, but fear of dentists is very widespread and its prevalence accounts for many diseases and disorders of the teeth and gums going unchecked and untreated. This is a bad situation, but luckily there are some dentists who are taking steps to reverse the situation.

You Can’t Ignore Your Dental Health

While some people might stay away from a dentist because of anxiety or fear of the pain associated with their dentist visits, ultimately staying away from the dentist is not a solution to this problem. For those who have serious or even mild diseases in their teeth and gums, life can become both extremely difficult and very painful the longer that you avoid the dentist. Furthermore, the more time that you stay away from the dentist the worse that your problems are inevitably becoming. No dental health issue ever solved itself, it requires action and very often it requires medical attention, so it’s important that you don’t think of staying at home an option when you are experience pain or discomfort, or have visible signs of a tooth or gum disease.

Enter Sedation Dentistry

For many people, sedation dentistry is the only window by which they can achieve the kind of healthy smile and great-looking teeth that they desire. The prospect of undergoing routine treatments is otherwise too difficult or painful to consider. Sedation dentistry is basically what it sounds like. It allows nervous patients to be sedated (by a variety of methods and to varying degrees depending on the severity of the patient’s anxiety) during dental procedures. It is typically not universally recommended by dentists but is available for those who are very nervous about getting any work done to their teeth.

When To Rely On Sedation Dentistry

As appealing as the prospect of sitting out your entire dental treatment may be, if you don’t experience anxiety or aren’t specifically agitated at the idea of being treated by a dentist, the particularly strong forms of sedation dentistry, such as the ones involving intravenous sedation, are probably not a good option for you. There are many different situations in which sedation dentistry can help you, including if you have a general fear of dentists and dental procedures and want to be completely “absent” during treatments. It’s also good for those who have a particular fear of needles or other procedure-specific dilemmas.

Each According To Their Capacity

It’s important to be flexible when you’re considering sedation dentistry. Try to make an effort to handle as much as you can. There are many different types of sedation including intravenous sedation, oral sedation, local anaesthetics and much more. Because of some of the risks associated with sedation, or the additional details and costs, it is usually wise to try to handle as much of a procedure as you can without resorting to sedation. Still, if you feel unable to do it, or have an instinctual sense that sedation is a better route for you, these therapies are available and can greatly reduce the amount of stress and discomfort that you feel when you visit the dentist.
